Fox Searchlight has just released the first trailer for the sweet, highly anticipated high school movie, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl three months ahead of its theatrical release on July 1, reports Variety. The film, directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, swept the awards at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, taking home both the Grand Jury Prize (Dramatic) and the Audience Award (Dramatic), and it’s hardly a surprise. Me and Earl is based on Jesse Andrews’ debut, bestselling novel of the same name, and early reviews indicated that the movie is funny, heartwarming, and the next big teen cult classic. And, most importantly, it’s not your typical boy-meets-girl either, as the main character, Greg (played by Thomas Mann), declares:
So, if this was a touching, romantic story, our eyes would meet and suddenly we would be furiously making out with the fire of a thousand suns. But this isn’t a touching story.
Instead, we get an unexpected tragicomedy that follows two high school seniors who like to make lo-fi parodies of the classics (for example, A Sockwork Orange), and a girl with leukemia who completes the trio in this coming-of-age story.
